Staying In Action: Part 2

Welcome back! We are eager to continue exploring ways in which we can stay in action. Before you read on, be sure you are all caught up with our first post.

Act On It
It might feel intimidating or it might be exhilarating – maybe a bit of both! – but what’s needed to create change in the world is putting our ideas into motion. We must move to action.

If, over time, you find your priorities shift and are no longer compelled by your initial dream, then use your blueprint as a guide to work toward a new vision for the world. See the future you wish to live in and take steps to move us toward it!

Going Against The Grain
In addition to big bold outward goals, experimenting with and acting on new behaviors, like you did with your Going Against My Grain habit during the Institute, is also a meaningful way to stay in action. Leadership and creating change aren’t only about what to do, but also how to be.

Build Resilient Habits
Stepping into leadership and working towards big and bold goals takes perseverance. Sometimes we’ll face obstacles that we need to overcome in order to stay in action. During these times, relying on our ability to be resilient is a great help. This is a theme we have explored on the blog before. October: Reflecting in the Moment

Here at LeaderShape, we rely on the power of our community to make what we do possible. We believe that anything is possible with a compelling vision, integrity, a supportive community and the commitment to stay in action. We spent September looking toward the future, and we hope you did too (head over to our Instagram account and check out the “September” story).

Our vision is a just, caring, and thriving world where everyone leads with integrity and lives in possibility. Where we work in community with one another. Where everyone recognizes their own gifts and finds ways to use them for the greater good. Our intention is to create spaces for others to be included and contribute in this world and then by doing so, lead others to do the same – “to lead, live”.

This month we want to invite everyone, including our staff and organization, to reflect in the moment. Being mindful and present with yourself, and groups you identify with, is beneficial to our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being.

Below is a peak at some of what we’ll be sharing on our social media platforms this month. We’re eager to reflect with the LeaderShape community this month!

National Book Month

Books expose us to new ideas, connect us to the lived experience of others, and can even bring about self-discovery. October is National Book Month and to celebrate, the LeaderShape staff is sharing what they have been reading.

Day 7

Leaders inevitably find themselves stuck in the mess; living and leading with integrity is no simple task, but it is possible. Because of this, we will focus our #Day7 in October around why mindfulness matters. Student leaders, especially, can become overwhelmed with everything that college life involves – attending class, preparing for papers and tests, attending club meetings and putting on campus events, not to mention maintaining relationships with friends, families, and partners. This alone can turn a normal nine to five day into a non-stop day with few breaks and little time for meals and sleep.

We believe that all of us, no matter our workload or commitments, is capable of practicing mindfulness. On Sunday, October 7th, follow the hashtag #MindfulnessMatters on Instagram and Twitter as we reflect on ways to practice mindfulness by yourself, with a group, and reasons why it’s beneficial for leaders.

LeaderShapers in Action

Over the past few weeks, we have heard from LeaderShapers across the nation who  are staying in action. And soon we’ll be sharing even more advice and stories from the participants and facilitators from our programs!

Our Valuable Time

I’ve been thinking a lot about time management lately. We are all given the same 24 hours in a day, yet some folks seem to accomplish so much more in that time! Wouldn’t it be great to use Hermione Granger’s Time Turner to add a few hours to your day?

Since I don’t have a Time Turner, I started considering some tools to help with time management. It’s important to be mindful about the ways in which we spend our valuable time. It’s so easy to spend our days out of focus – where 2 minutes of checking Instagram can turn into 2 hours of mindlessly reading social media. Maybe these strategies will help you find more time in your day and be more mindful about how you spend that found time!

Laura Vanderkam’s book, “What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast” will likely lead you to set your alarm a little earlier each day. I like her philosophy of using early morning hours to build habits and set our days off on the right foot. Even if you’re not a morning person, adding 15 minutes to your morning routine can help you create a better habit. Maybe you’d use that time to scan your work email, meditate, read, stretch, or make a great breakfast.

Gretchen Rubin, author of “The Four Tendencies” and “Better than Before” among other books, is known for her time management philosophies. Her daily time log template allows you to track your time in 30-minute increments, with the goal of finding more purpose in your day. While that can seem like an intense adherence to time management, even a few days of tracking can help you identify some opportunities to improve how you spend your time. Maybe tracking your time will help you see that you’re spending more time than you’d like on social media or watching Netflix.

If a printed time log isn’t your thing but you’d still like to try tracking your time, check out the Hours Time Tracking app. It’s a great app that will remind you track your time throughout the day. I like that you can color code your tasks and edit them. I’ve used this app for a few weeks now and I like being able to look back at my day to see how I’ve spent my time.
